CCAHS History

In September 1995 the first Adult High School within the Board opened in the Church Hall of Trinity St. Stephen's Church located in Amherst, Nova Scotia. Following school board amalgamation in 1996 the Adult High School steadily expanded throughout the Chignecto Board. In 1997, the program began in Truro and New Glasgow. In the fall of 2002, a site opened in Elmsdale. This regional program comprised of four sites located in Amherst, Elmsdale, New Glasgow and Truro, serves the learners of each respective county and Family of Schools. Within the Board's organizational structure the Chignecto-Central Adult High School (CCAHS) is part of the Community Education and Partnerships Division in Education Services.

Beginning with the class of 1996 and up to and including the class of 2011 the total number of graduates has reached over one thousand. Students receive their Nova Scotia High School Graduation Diploma or the Nova Scotia High School Graduation Diploma for Adults. Student success is the result of committed partners such as the Nova Scotia School for Adult Learning, Service Canada, Department of Community Services and Career Resource Centres throughout the Region working in partnership with dedicated staff to support students and enable them to realize their potential.

The Chignecto Central Adult High School was created to provide a chance for learners whose education was interrupted to receive a real high school diploma. There are many reasons why you may have been unable to complete high school. Maybe you chose to work, or had family or other commitments which disrupted your education. We can give you the opportunity to take control of your future and continue your education. We provide a mature environment with caring teachers and small class sizes. Whether you plan to continue your studies at community college or university our diploma programs are recognized at all post secondary institutions.
